New York City Zsolnay Art Pottery from the Collection of Dr. László Gyugyi at the Forbes Galleries 01/23/2009

The exhibition contains 160 Art Nouveau vases, cachepots, and pitchers from the Zsolnay (ZHOLE-noy) ceramic factory and offers a rare chance to appreciate the range of ceramics produced by the factory. The innovative glazed and shaped pieces feature animal motifs or quintessentially Hungarian imagery such as poppy blossoms, horse chestnut leaves and sheepskin-clad peasants. The exhibition is culled from the collection of Dr. Gyugyi, a Hungarian-born engineer from Pittsburgh who assembled some 600 pieces of Zsolnay. In cooperation with Cultural Exchange Foundation, the collection will be donated to Pécs, Hungary, designated a Cultural Capital by the European Union for 2010 and will be displayed at the former Zsolnay factory and family home.
