Greg Tate is a conductor, music director, and writer who explores the black music culture and its use in modern society. He is director and music conductor for the band Burnt Sugar, which is a fusion group that utilizes African, jazz, folk, and rock music. Tate’s writings on music and culture have been featured in a large variety of publications including The Village Voice, where he is a staff writer, as well as in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, The Washington Post, Spin, Artforum, The Nation, Premiere, and DownBeat. He has also written two books entitled Flyboy In the Buttermilk, Midnight Lightning: Jimi Hendrix and the Black Experience and Everything But the Burden: What White People Are Taking From Black Culture.
